So I finally joined a gym. It seems like that's what everyone does in their twenties and I didn't want to be left out. Now that we no longer have the JV and Varsity teams of high school to keep us fit nor the free gyms and rec centers in college, the local gym is where we must go to fight the slower metabolisms that are now upon us.When I tell people that I've joined a gym, many of them have responded by saying that I don't need to lose weight. It's interesting how many people equate working out with losing weight. The reason for me to go to the gym is not to lose weight but to stay fit and healthy. I think in our American society that is plagued with obesity and in LA, an obsession to be thin, people seem to forget that the real reason to work out is to be healthy.
Next, I should probably sign up for a race of some sort. That's also what everyone my age seems to be doing. I guess we'll have to see how consistent I am about going to the gym. Because it's new, I'm excited about it but the real test will be how often I'm going in 3-6 months. I'll let you know how it goes. And then we can TALK about a race.
I'm part of LA Fitness! But UK style :)
ReplyDeleteIt's worth signing up for a small race, like a 5k (which you know you can do...with a bit of work!), then you'll stay motivated to train for it! Woot woot!
There's an LA Fitness in the UK? I just found out last month that there are LA Fitnesses in Mississippi and that blew my mind. Next you'll tell me that there are California Pizza Kitchens outside of California!
ReplyDeleteJen,
As someone who hasn't walked into a 24 HR fitness in over 6 months and continues to pay the monthly fee... I wish you good luck. I failed miserably.
My newest plan is to start playing 1v0 basketball.

@kira Yeah if I do any race, I would do a starter kit such as a 5k. But we shall see. I don't know if running competitively is my cup of tea. I'm still congratulating myself on just running at all!
ReplyDelete@zach Thanks for the well wishes. I'll need it. I joined last week and I haven't gone since. And I was supposed to go yesterday and today and instead I played Plants vs Zombies (my new iPhone obsession). =( I'm just gonna chalk it up to the fact that my workout buddy has been sick. Once she's back, I'll be back!
Yes there's an LA Fitness in the UK, often referred to as LA Shitness - I should see if I can get a discount as I'm actually from LA!
ReplyDeleteYou don't need to run competitively! Races are normally really laid back and fun, and it's great to have people cheering for you. I also find it helps keep me motivated if I know I have to actually do the race. But very good for you gym bunny :) Keep up the good work.
